西村画廊では、2024年11月5日（火）から12月14日（土）まで、創業50周年を記念した展覧会「西村画廊50年」を開催いたします。

1974年6月、東京・銀座に開廊し、今年2024年で50周年を迎えた当画廊は、第1 回目の「リチャード・リンドナー版画展」から今年6-8月の「ブリジット・ライリー PRINTS 1972-2018」まで、計309 回の展覧会を開催してきました。
開廊当初から、当時まだ日本で馴染みが薄かったイギリス現代作家の紹介に注力し、デイヴィッド・ホックニー、ルシアン・フロイド、リチャード・ハミルトン、ブリジット・ライリー、ピーター・ブレイクら、同国トップクラスの作家の展覧会を繰り返し開催してきました。また、オットー・ディックス、ポール・デイビス、ホルスト・アンテス、アニッシュ・カプーア、ウォーカー・エバンズ、キーンホルツなど、イギリス以外の海外作家の展覧会も多数催し、高い評価を得てきました。

一方で、新たな日本人作家を見出し、彼らの発表の場も提供してきました。開廊翌年の1975年に開催した草間彌生の帰国第1 回個展、篠原有司男の渡米後の初個展、実験的なテーマ展として注目を集めた「本・オブジェ展」、田名網敬一、合田佐和子、櫃田伸也、榎倉康二、若林奮、中西夏之、横尾忠則、荒木経惟らの新作展、そして1985年には、日本の彫刻表現を牽引し今年3月に逝去した舟越桂の個展を開催しました。以後、舟越の他、小林孝亘、押江千衣子、三沢厚彦、町田久美、曽谷朝絵らの新作展を継続的に行い、その魅力や展開を多面的かつ長期的に見せてきました。

本展では、舟越桂の2011年の木彫《誰の眼とあるか、スフィンクス？》をはじめ、小林孝亘、押江千衣子、三沢厚彦、町田久美、曽谷朝絵の最新作を公開します。併せて、当画廊のコレクションから、横尾忠則が愛猫タマを描いた《タマ、帰っておいで》シリーズのペインティングや細江英公が三島由紀夫を被写体に撮り下ろした《薔薇刑》のオリジナル・プリント、そしてデイヴィッド・ホックニー、ブリジット・ライリー、ピーター・ブレイク、ホルスト・アンテスのドローイングや版画も披露いたします。どうぞご期待ください。皆様のご来廊を心よりお待ちしております。

Nishimura Gallery will hold the exhibition “Nishimura Gallery 50 Years” from 5 November to 14 December 2024 to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The gallery, which opened in Ginza, Tokyo in June 1974, has held a total of 309 exhibitions from the first “Richard Lindner Prints” to “Bridget Riley PRINTS 1972-2018” from June to August this year.
Since its opening, the gallery has focused on introducing contemporary British artists who were not well known in Japan at the time, and has repeatedly held exhibitions of top-class British artists such as David Hockney, Lucian Freud, Richard Hamilton, Bridget Riley, and Peter Blake. The gallery has also hosted numerous highly acclaimed exhibitions of non-British artists such as Otto Dix, Paul Davis, Horst Antes, Anish Kapoor, Walker Evans, and Kienholz.

At the same time, the gallery has discovered new Japanese artists and have presented their works as well. In 1975, the year after the gallery opened, we held the first solo exhibition of Yayoi Kusama after her return to Japan, the first solo exhibition of Ushio Shinohara after his move to the United States, the “Books and Objects” exhibition attracted attention as an experimental thematic exhibition, and new works by Keiichi Tanaami, Sawako Goda, Nobuya Hitsuda, Koji Enokura, Isamu Wakabayashi, Natsuyuki Nakanishi, Tadanori Yokoo, Nobuyoshi Araki and others. In 1985, we held a solo exhibition of Katsura Funakoshi, a leading figure in Japanese sculpture who passed away in March of this year. Since then, in addition to Funakoshi, we have continuously held exhibitions of new works by Takanobu Kobayashi, Chieko Oshie, Atsuhiko Misawa, Kumi Machida, Asae Soya, and others, showing their appeal and development in a multifaceted and long-term manner.

This exhibition features Katsura Funakoshi’s 2011 wood sculpture “Sphinx, with Whose Eyes?” and the latest works by Takanobu Kobayashi, Chieko Oshie, Atsuhiko Misawa, Kumi Machida, and Asae Soya. Also on view from the gallery’s collection are paintings from Tadanori Yokoo’s “Requiem for Tama” series featuring his beloved cat Tama, an original print of Eikoh Hosoe’s “Ordeal by Roses” featuring Yukio Mishima, and drawings and prints by David Hockney, Bridget Riley, Peter Blake, and Horst Antes will also be featured.
