西村画廊では6月23日（土曜）より7月21日（土曜）まで「もう一つの三沢厚彦展−Another Unity」を開催致します。
三沢厚彦は1961年京都市に生まれ、東京芸術大学彫刻科（木彫専攻）を経て1989年に同大学院美術研究科を修了しました。2000年に当画廊での初個展「アニマルズ」を開催し、荒削りの楠に油絵具で着彩する手法で実物大の動物を表現した木彫作品を発表しました。動物という馴染みのあるテーマを扱いながら、生き生きとしてユーモラスな形をした今までになく新しい三沢の作品は注目を集め、2001年には第20回平櫛田中賞を受賞、翌年の個展「アニマルズ02」の際には作品集『アニマルズ』（求龍堂）が出版されました。また個性的な動物の様子を自由な発想でのびのびと紙に描いたドローイング作品も好評で、2003年には絵本『動物たち』（理論社）を出版し、同年西村画廊でドローイングの個展も開催しました。2005年には第15回タカシマヤ美術賞を受賞し、確かな技術と独自の表現が高く評価され、現在最も注目されている木彫作家の一人として活躍を続けています。なお、2007年4月から2008年3月まで平塚市美術館を皮切りに三沢厚彦初の回顧展「アニマルズ＋」が全国5館を巡回します。初期の荒削りな犬や猫、迫力のあるゾウやキリン、ユーモラスな佇まいのマンドリルや最新作のユニコーン、鳥など、大きさもかたちも様々な作品を一堂に集め、木彫作家・三沢厚彦の全てを展望できる展覧会です。
この度の西村画廊での「もう一つの三沢厚彦展−Another Unity」は、美術館における木彫作品中心の回顧展と対をなし、作家としての三沢厚彦をより深く総体的に追求する展覧会です。封筒の裏や段ボールなど素材にこだわらず即興的に描かれたドローイングからは、日常的に考察している制作の鍵となる事柄が端々から伝わります。また紙で作った小さな鳥の作品には、かたちが出てこようとしているプリミティブな勢いがあり、木彫の実物大の鳥とはまた別の魅力が感じられます。こうしたドローイングや粘土の作品は木彫の制作につながる断片的な要素を適格に伝える一方で、一つの完成された作品世界をも体現しています。また、三沢の制作を深部で支える非常に重要な要素である「音楽」への愛情も本展の見どころの一つとなります。最新作となる寝転んだ姿勢がコミカルな白熊の木彫1点を中心に、ドローイング約30点、動物だけではなくキャラクターなどを形作った粘土の作品約15点を、独自のセンスでリズミカルに配置した三沢厚彦ならではの展示空間にご期待下さい。
Nishimura Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition "Another
Unity" by Atsuhiko Misawa from June 23rd to July 21st, 2007.
The sculptor, Atsuhiko Misawa is popular for the wooden life-sized
sculptures of animals. Born in Kyoto City in 1961, Misawa majoured
in sculpture at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music
and graduated master course in 1989. His early career was characterized
by the series of assemblage sculptures called 'Koloido Tonp'.
Misawa's first exhibition at Nishimura Gallery was held in 2000.
There, he presented life-sized animal sculptures such as zebra,
dog, cat etc, that are all wood-curved and oil painted, for the
first time as his major subject.
Although being engaged in such a universal motif, animals, he shows
us a new aspect of wooden sculpture. Misawa's creatures are all
lively and humorous, but extremely untamed.
Misawa won the 20th Hirakushi Denchu Prize in 2001 and the winning
exhibitions were held in Nihonbashi Takashimaya, Tokyo and Ibara
Municipal Denchu Art Museum, Okayama.
His first book 'Animals' was published by the Kyuryudo Publishing
Inc., in 2002.
In 2005, he was awarded the 15th Takashimaya Charitable Trust for
Art and Culture Prize and we believe that it again assured his technical
proficiency and artistic creativity.
Misawa's first retrospective "Animals +" is touring at
five museums in Japan from April 2007 to March 2008. It contains
from his early works to the latest series, including gigantic unicorns,
and may give a wide overview toward works of the artist.
The exhibition at Nishimura Gallery, "Another Unity"
includes more personal works of the artist, straight out from his
studio, and is intended to present more intimate insight and understanding
on the overall creativity. This would make a clear contrast to the
retrospective in the museum.
Misawa's improvisational drawings on the back of used envelopes
or cardboards tell eloquently that how the artist's ideas are developing
among his daily life. The work of little bird, made of paper, seems
fragile but has a primitive energy, and has a different charm from
his life-size wooden bird. These drawings and sculptures, on the
one hand, are embodying an 'incomplete' or on-the-way element that
is to evolve into his major wooden works, and on the another hand,
are embodying one complete aesthetics by themselves.
One other thing characterizing this exhibition is the artist's adoration
for popular music, which supports his inspiration at the very bottom.
The show contains his newest work, a wooden polar bear who lies
on his back naughtily and 30 drawings, 30 little clay sculptures
including not only animals but also other sort of figures such as
cartoon characters. They are all installed unique and rhythmic way
by the artist himself. We wish you to enjoy another side of Misawa's
