西村画廊では、2016年6月7日(火)から7月9日(土)まで、日本の現代彫刻を牽引する作家の一人、三沢厚彦(1960年、京都府生まれ)の新作展「ANIMALS 2016」を開催いたします。

三沢は1989年に東京藝術大学大学院修了後、流木やプラスティックなどを寄せ集めた大型のアサンブラージュ作品を経て、2000年に木彫彩色による動物彫刻「ANIMALS」のシリーズを制作開始、同年に開催した西村画廊での初個展で発表しました。同展は大きな反響を呼び、翌年三沢は第20回平櫛田中賞を受賞します。2007-08年には平塚市美術館を皮切りに全国5館で巡回展、その後も毎年各地の美術館で大々的な個展が開催されている他、作品集や絵本等の著作も多数刊行されるなど、旺盛な活躍を継続しています。今年は、夏に大分市アートプラザで個展、ヴァンジ彫刻庭園美術館(静岡)でグループ展が予定されています。

三沢は、巨大なゾウやキリンから小さなヤモリやネズミ、ユニコーンやペガサスのような架空の存在まで、多種多様な動物を等身大の姿で樟から彫り起こします。それら「ANIMALS」は、つかみどころのない表情を湛え、凛然とした清々しい雰囲気を宿しており、表面に残る荒々しくも繊細な鑿痕も相まって、思わず触れたくなるような親密さ、量感あふれる独特の存在感を放っています。

「動物」と一口に言っても、我々の頭の中には、獣としてのそれだったり、物語の登場人物やぬいぐるみなどのようにキャラクター化されたそれだったりと、様々な様相が混在しています。それらの内のどれでもなく、もしくはどれでもあるようにも見える三沢の彫刻は、我々の内側に在る「動物」という概念をそのまま抽出したかのようにシンボリックで、それゆえ鑑賞者に多様な解釈を許します。彼の「ANIMALS」が底知れない不可解さと強い魅力を発し、見る者に一過性で終わらない深い感動をもたらす所以は、こうしたところにあるのかもしれません。

今回の新作展では、高さ約160cmの座ったライオンをはじめ、クマ、ネコ、タヌキ、ウサギ、カエルなど、大小様々な「ANIMALS」が約10体集合します。当画廊ではおよそ4年振りとなる三沢厚彦の個展に、ぜひご期待ください。皆様のご来廊を心よりお待ちしております。


Nishimura Gallery will present “ANIMALS 2016,” an exhibition of new works by Atsuhiko Misawa (b. 1960, Kyoto), one of the leading artists of contemporary sculptural expression in Japan, from 7 June to 9 July, 2016.

After completing the graduate course at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1989, Misawa began creating large scale assemblages of driftwood, plastic, and other materials. In 2000, he began creating the “ANIMALS” series of colored wood carved animal sculptures, which were shown in his first solo exhibition at Nishimura Gallery in the same year. The exhibition was a great success, and Misawa was awarded the 20th Hirakushi Denchu Prize the following year. Since then, Misawa has continued to be active in the art world, holding major solo exhibitions at art museums around Japan every year, and publishing numerous books of his works and picture books, etc. In this summer, a solo exhibition at the Art Plaza, Oita and a group exhibition at the Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum, Shizuoka are scheduled.

Misawa carves a wide variety of animals, from a giant elephant and giraffes to small geckos and rats, and fictional beings such as unicorns and pegasuses, from life-size forms on camphor wood. Those “ANIMALS” have an elusive expression and a dignified, fresh atmosphere, which, combined with the rough but delicate chisel marks on the surface, give them an intimacy that makes you want to touch them, and a unique presence full of volume.

The word “animal” is a mixture of various aspects in our minds, such as that of a beast, a character in a story, a stuffed animal, etc. Misawa’s sculptures are none of these, or seem to be all of them, are symbolic, as if the concept of “animals” inside of us has been extracted directly from them, and therefore open to diverse interpretations by the viewer. This may be the reason why his “ANIMALS” emit an unfathomable mystery and strong appeal, and bring a deep i mpression to the viewer that is not transitory.

In this exhibition of new sculptures, he will present about 10 ANIMALS of various sizes, including an about 160 cm tall seated lion, bears, cats, raccoons, rabbits, frogs, etc. The exhibition will be the first time in about four years that the gallery has exhibited ANIMALS.
