西村画廊では、2017年10月10日(火)から11月18日(土)まで、ドローイング、版画、写真作品によるグループ展“Drawings and Prints”を開催します。本展では、デイヴィッド・ホックニー、リチャード・ハミルトン、ピーター・ブレイク、ホルスト・アンテス、中西夏之、町田久美の作品を中心に、約30点をご紹介します。

ホックニーは、1970年代のリトグラフから近年のiPadドローイング“The Yosemite Suite”まで、幅広い技法と年代にわたる作品約二十点を展示します。中でも1989年に当画廊が企画・開催した写真展“Photographs of China”のシリーズからは、十数点のオリジナル・プリントをご紹介します。このシリーズは、1981年にホックニーが詩人のスティーヴン・スペンダーと共に中国を旅した際に撮影されたもので、意表を突く洗練された構図でとらえられた場面の数々は、彼の絵画作品にも通じる新鮮な美的感覚を想起させます。ホックニーが異国の地で瞬間的に反応した色彩、造形、状況、フレーミングは、この稀代の画家の思考の一端を垣間見させてくれると同時に、我々が世界を見る視点を豊かに塗り替える驚きに満ちています。なお、“Photographs of China”は全ての写真がエディションではなくユニーク・プリント（限定1枚）であるという点も、大きな魅力の一つといえるでしょう。その他、ハミルトンとブレイクのスクリーン・プリント、アンテスのドローイング、モノタイプ、リトグラフの作品を展示します。また、中西夏之の未公開ドローイングや町田久美の新作版画も発表します。

Nishimura Gallery is pleased to present “Drawings and Prints,” a group exhibition of drawings, prints, and photographs from Tuesday, October 10 through Saturday, November 18, 2017. The exhibition will feature works by David Hockney, Richard Hamilton, Peter Blake, Horst Antes, Natsuyuki Nakanishi, and Kumi Machida.

We will exhibit approximately 20 of Hockney’s works, spanning a wide range of techniques and ages, from 1970s lithographs to his recent iPad drawing “The Yosemite Suite”.In particular, we will present over a dozen original prints from the “Photographs of China” series, an exhibition we organized and held at our gallery in 1989. The series was taken during Hockney’s trip to China with poet Stephen Spender in 1981, and the unexpected and sophisticated compositions of the scenes evoke a fresh aesthetic sense that is familiar to his paintings. The colors, shapes, situations, and framing to which Hockney responded instantaneously in a foreign land offer a glimpse into the thinking of this great artist, and at the same time are full of surprises that richly rewrite the way we view the world. One of the most fascinating aspects of “Photographs of China” is that each photograph is a unique print (limited to one), not an edition.

In addition, we will be showing screen prints by Richard Hamilton and Peter Blake, drawings, monotypes and lithographs by Antes.
We will also exhibit an unseen drawing by Natsuyuki Nakanishi and new prints by Kumi Machida.
