西村画廊では、2013年5月7日(火）から6月15日(土）まで、町田久美の約2年半振りの新作展を開催いたします。

町田久美は1970年群馬県高崎市に生まれ、1994年に多摩美術大学絵画科日本画専攻を卒業しました。2004年、西村画廊での最初の展覧会「日本画二人展 中村ケンゴ・町田久美」を開催。伝統的な「日本画」に使用される画材を用いながらも、従来の枠組みにとらわれず自由な表現を切り開く作家として注目を集めました。その後、“The Sovereign Asian Art Prize 2007”の受賞や多数の展覧会への参加など、国内外での評価を着実に積み重ねてきました。2012年には、初めての作品集（青幻舎）が刊行されました。

町田の作品は、和紙（主に雲肌麻紙）にくっきりと描かれた最低限の墨線と、大胆に残された余白、顔料や岩絵具によるミニマルな彩色が特徴的です。一見勢いよく引かれたかのような墨線は、実は細い線を何度も何度も重ねるという緻密な作業から成るもので、作品にしなやかで強靭な意志を与えています。また、太くはっきりした墨線とは対照的に、瞳や鼻、口元などは墨絵の技法、没骨を思わせるグラデーションで描写的に描かれているのも多くの町田作品に見られる特色であり、作品に不思議な深みと魅力を与えています。
町田の作品には、自意識の葛藤や社会的な違和感、他者とのコミュニケーションに潜む不安など、現代を生きる私たちが経験する捉えどころのない感覚が示唆的に表われています。独自の表現を持ちながらも普遍的で多義的な広がりを持つ彼女の作品は国内外で高い注目を集めており、近年の展覧会では、ドイツ・ハノーバーのケストナーゲゼルシャフトや高崎市タワー美術館、ノルウェイのフ・ガムレ・プラステゴーでの個展、またグループ展「バイバイキティ!!! 天国と地獄の狭間で-日本現代アートの今-」(ジャパン・ソサエティ、ニューヨーク)などが記憶に新しいところです。
現在は「ジパング展」（～6月16日、高崎市美術館）に『とまり木』（2007）をはじめ3点が出品されています。今後は、「アジアの女性アーティスト展　アジアをつなぐ-境界を生きる女たち 1984-2012」（4月13日~6月23日、三重県立美術館）、「ワンダフル・マイ・アート－高橋コレクションの作家たち－」（4月14日~9月16日、河口湖美術館）への出品が予定されています。　

今回の新作展では、130号2枚組の大型作品を中心とした約10~12点の新作ペインティングとドローイングを発表します。いずれも、これまでの作風からの変化を感じさせる、力強く繊細な作品です。

新たな展開を見せる町田久美の新作に、どうぞご期待ください。

Nishimura Gallery is pleased to present “Machida Kumi -New Works-” from Tuesday, May 7th to Saturday, June 15th 2013. It is been about two and a half years since the last time of Machida’s one-man exhibition at our gallery.

MACHIDA Kumi was born in Gunma prefecture, 1970. She graduated from Tama University of Art in 1994, majoring in Japanese paintings. In 2004, Machida showed some paintings in the exhibition of “MACHIDA Kumi / NAKAMURA Kengo” held at Nishimura Gallery (This was first exhibition for her at our gallery.) As she expressed freely in the field of traditional Japanese paintings, her works has attracted many attentions. After that, she has been get reputation gradually in and outside Japan by the winning of “The Sovereign Asian Art Prize 2007” and a lot of exhibitions in many countries. In 2012, her first book was published from Seigensha Art Publishing, Inc.

The remarkable points of her works are the clear and minimum lines on Japanese paper (Mainly kumohada linen papers) and minimal coloring by pigments or mineral pigments. As regards the lines, at the first sight you may think they are thick lines drawn with vigor, but actually they are thin lines drawn repeatedly to give strong impression. On the other hand, eyes, nose, mouth are painted realistically without outlines, like “Mokkotsu” (a technique in Oriental art of painting.) This is also characteristic in many her paintings and it adds subtle depth and attraction to the paintings.

Machida’s paintings express indirectly the familiar feelings for us like that emotional turmoil as a result of self-consciousness, uncomfortable feeling in the society, and anxiety in communication with other people. Universal and ambiguous her works are attracting people’s attention in the world. One-man exhibition at Kestnergesellshaft, Hanover, Takasaki Tower Museum, Ha° gamle prestega°rd, Norway, and group exhibition of “Bye Bye Kitty!!!” at Japan Society, New York are still fresh in memory.

Now, you could see the Machida’s paintings in the following 3 exhibitions: “ZIPANG” (~June 16th, Takasaki Museum of Art) “Women In-Between: Asian Women Artists 1984-2012” (~June 23rd, Mie Prefectural Museum) “Wonderful My Art -Selected Artists from Takahashi Collection” (~September 16th, Kawaguchiko Museum of Art.)

In this exhibition, she will exhibits about 10~12 paintings and drawings. You must be feel freshness different from her past works.
